While the benefits of cross-media VDP are fairly well known, there are limited 'public' examples of VDP cross-media campaigns. Fuji Xerox Australia recently created a campaign to showcase the capablities of cross-media in VDP. Although it's not a 'real' direct marketing campaign, it's a viral acquisition campaign that illustrates the power that cross-media brings to variable-data publishing.
The campaign was developed using XMPie PersonalEffect and uses a combination of media channels to:
1. Capture visitor information
2. Generate personalised vector images on-demand (using XMPie uImage for Illustrator)
3. Send personalised email
4. Send personalised sms
5. Receive SMS responses and back SMS replies (using SMS as a response channel)
6. Generate a personalised webpage
7. Generate a PDF 'hero kit'
Try it for yourself by cranking up your speaker volume and visit www.beasuperhero.com.au.
Note: If you are outside of Australia and want to receive an SMS, enter your country code and number in the mobile field — no international dialing code is required.

I think you've hit the nail on the head in saying that "are limited 'public' examples of VDP cross-media campaigns" !
And in saying this... it strengthens the proposition for beasuperhero.com.au as also a great example of how dynamic document generation (even direct web2print) can also be leveraged using the XMPie Personal Effect Platform. Though in the beasuperhero.com.au example the .PDF is downloadable it's worth mentioning that this PDF has been created using InDesign Server and can be output to print format just as easily as electronic. The true value of XMPie as the best VDP solution around is made more compelling knowing that it can be driven by the web.
