Speciality Imaging

Protecting sensitive documents from counterfeiting is a growing concern. To help combat document fraud, scientists in the Xerox Innovation Group have developed a set of speciality imaging effects to add an extra level of security to documents. This technology, known as 'Speciality Imaging' is supported through embedded commands in Xerox's VIPP variable information language.

As these imaging effects are part of VIPP, they can be completely variable which provide signficant security benefits to documents such as documents such as coupons, tickets, identity cards, and other security-related applications.

Not surprisingly, Xerox has limited use of this technology to Xerox production printers and controllers, but this in turn provides a unique selling point for Xerox.

Currently there are two VDP software solutions which support these speciality imaging features; Xerox VI Designer and Lytrod Designer.

These speciality imaging features include five different effects:

MicroText marks is text that can be printed at smaller than 1 point size, readable only with a loupe or magnifying glass.

Correlation marks is printed text that is only visible when superimposed by a "key" overlay.

Glossmark® text is printed text that is not visible in straight-on view, but becomes visible under inclined illumination.

FluorescentMark is printed text that is only visible under UV/black-light.

InfraRed text is printed text that is only visible in the dark, with an infrared camera.

Xerox have been careful not to position these features as 'security features', as no printed applications can offer 100% security. However, it's definitely a good deterent against fraud.

There are numerous ways that this technology can be incorporated into VDP applications, you're just limited by your imagination. For example, you could add a variable correlation mark to lottery tickets, or include a ticket number as a Glossmark text on concert tickets, or even add MicroText to legal contracts — which brings a whole new meaning to the term "reading the fine print"!
