Try It Yourself

Further to my last entry, I had some time during my 15 hour flight home to try some more video personalisation in Photoshop and XMPie uImage. I've simplified my original approach so that it's easier customise and have added in additional personalised text and a logo.

I've decided to share this Photoshop document, so you can see how to create this type of effect (known as rotoscoping), which enables the personalised objects to move in synchronisation with the movie file. Note that you will need to use Photoshop CS3 Extended, as the Animation feature is not available in other versions. Also, you will need to purchase the background movie from iStockphoto. This movie is catalogue id #5084177 on their Web site. You should purchase the 640 x 360 size version, which costs 20 credits, or US$26. When you open the Photoshop document, you will be prompted to link to the file that you purchased from iStockphoto.

When editing the Photoshop document, please note that the text and logo on the card was placed as a single Smart Object in the different Photoshop layers. As a result, if you double-click on any smart object thumbnail (in the layer panel), regardless of the layer, Illustrator will open up the same Smart Object. If you edit this Illustrator document then save, your changes will automatically be applied to all Photoshop layers.

I haven't added any uImage tags to the Illustrator Smart Object, but it's trivial to replace my sample text with your required tags.

Once you've customised the file as required, you will need to grab Tamar's tutorial and JavaScript file from the Library section on xmpieusers.org, which will enable you to automate movie generation using uPlan or uDirect Studio. These files aren't posted yet, but should be available shortly.

Dear Eliot,

The Photoshop document seems to be damaged(?).

Odd. Works for me. Are you using Photoshop CS3 Extended? It does not work in other or earlier Photoshop versions. I'm using Windows, but it should work on Mac too.
