XMPie and PARC

Venture Beat featured a story on Xerox PARC today, which gives an insight into some projects currently under development. Surprisingly, one of the projects is from XMPie (now a wholly owned Xerox business unit). The article explains:

"Personalized Communications Technology could allow retailers to specifically target an individual with sales offers. Think Amazon.com's recommendation engine. This project at Xerox's Webster, N.Y.-based XMPie software business unit is essentially a package that includes everything a company needs to target marketing collateral so that it's more relevant to the recipient. It can include special offers for products that the consumer is know. Once the consumer responds, the system measures the effectiveness of the pitch. The results can then be used to apply the results for the next campaign."

I must admit, I was a little disappointed with the news of this project. This "technology" is hardly a new, ground breaking innovation from PARC. XMPie users have been doing this stuff for years. It really doesn't have the "wow" factor like the 'erasable paper' or 'rare cell detection' projects also noted in this article. However, it's interesting to note that XMPie are now working alongside Xerox PARC—I wonder what they're really working on...
